Becoming Ourselves

Origins

It is helpful to look at ourselves as we were originally created. Think of the development of a human baby. At birth it begins to sense and interact with its world. It is taking in a constant flow of sense impressions and flows from one experience to the next without becoming stuck on anything. It will respond spontaneously and express any need of its being. It expresses a flow of emotion - delight, curiosity, distress, peace... You know what is happening with the baby because its whole being is being shown in every moment.

As it develops, the brain becomes more organized. The eyes transmit impulses to the brain which begins to recognize shapes, so that if the same object is seen on different occasions it is recognized as the same. Similarly with the other senses. This faculty is part of the mechanism needed to live in a physical world. The ability to recognize plants suitable for food and situations which could harm the body was essential for pre-historic man.

With the development of speech, some of this knowledge could be taught by parents. Other things were transmitted by gesture and emotion to children. With all this, the mind became active and started creating patterns within itself about the things that were experienced. It then began creating patterns within itself about the patterns it had created and taken in from others. Some of these patterns can become reinforced by repetition and start to seem more real than the things from which they originated. Thinking began to move away from its original purpose.

The human body contains a beautiful network which connects the sense organs and the brain. A condensation of sensing is available to the mind and also expresses from the mind. All of this also is connected directly to a more subtle organism which we will call the soul. This connection does not go via the mind, but there is an interplay between the soul, the mind and the physical organism.

What we are aware of in a physical form is a composite of this interplay. Our awareness, which can be thought of as the sensing organ of the entire being, can encompass all of this from physical sensing to the most refined movement in parts of our being well away from the physical realm. It can also sense and interact with movements even more subtle than the vibrations held within itself.

The Move Away

What has happened to modern man is that the thinking mind has become so strong that it is dominating the awareness most of the time. We are not experiencing life in the fullness of our original creation. Before these times a human felt himself to be part of everything - that is he had not created patterns of thought which told him he was not.

We were created to live as a beautiful being spontaneously aware in totality and effortlessly responding to life as it flowed through us. All parts of ourselves can function as they were designed to and work together as a vibrant harmonious whole.

The Move Back

It is possible for man to return to that state of splendour. It is not very difficult. Once you have some understanding, the distortions within the thinking mind begin to relax and the instinctual impulse placed within us when we were created begins to operate to move us back to that state. This process is shown to us in every moment by what we are experiencing. The key is to become more present with what is really there. The thinking mind has a limited role in this and much of it is correcting errors within itself which impede the process. What will be felt is an emotional response to each moment and as the awareness is able to be with that experience, it will begin to change and go deeper to undo emotional distortions. There will often be physical sensations, perhaps uncomfortable ones, which is the whole being showing what is being worked on.

As this proceeds there will be a blend of sensations in the mind, the emotions and the body. If this is simply experienced, the change will naturally occur. There is a greater part of your being which is arranging all this. What is needed is far beyond the mind to comprehend, let alone arrange.

The result of this is that you will experience something and there will be less tendency for the mind to associate a belief with the experience or for a distorted emotional response to be generated. You begin to experience a more pristine life.

This will return you to an experience of life as it was originally intended to be, because you have returned to being what you were originally created as. Most people have experienced moments of this in their lives though sometimes without recognizing it.

And Beyond

Then you will unfold even further into realms and experiences which are beyond the power of words to describe.
